Covid Mask Acne | Tips to Avoid Mask Acne | Mask Acne Treatment suggested by Dermatologist

Wearing a mask during this pandemic is a necessity but on the other hand could cause a lot of skin problems. Multi-layered face mask does provide about 95% of filtration when worn tightly against the face. Generally, the mask area is already an acne prone area where you tend to get more and more breakouts.

What is Maskne?

One of the common skin problems while wearing a mask is Maskne also known as Mask Acne. Mask Acne is caused when someone tends to get breakouts by wearing face mask throughout the day localized in the part of the face covered by face mask. It does cause irritation, itching, redness and rashes specially when you are a healthcare worker and must wear a mask all day long.

Tips to Avoid Mask Acne

1) Use Non-Comedogenic Skincare Moisturizers: Non-Comedogenic are some defined ingredients which helps to avoid skin pore blockages and other signs that may result into acne. Sometimes, non-comedogenic term is mentioned on the skincare product which becomes much easier to distinguish. Avoid ingredients such as Shea Butter, mineral Oil, Castor Oil, Coconut Oil, Lauric Acid, etc. in a product. You may choose moisturizers that has niacinamide, hyaluronic acids, propolis and ceramides. You might like to go with lighter or gel-based moisturizer during the daytime and rich or cream based moisturizer during night-time to maintain skin’s healthy barrier. Remember that your skin still needs to be hydrated because dry skin could increase other skin issues and may facilitate acne.

2) Go for Gentle Gel based Mild Cleanser: You might like to use a gel-based Cleansers both during daytime and night-time as it gives you extra clean face with no stripping off the skin. I do believe in double cleansing your face at night since you would have to remove extra dirt and makeup from your face for that, therefore using a makeup remover before washing your face with a cleanser would help you take-off all kinds of impurities. I would suggest using water-based cleanser instead of oil or balm cleansers as they could leave your skin oily. Salicylic Acid and Sulphur proves to be much more effective to prevent acne in form of a cleanser.

3) What About Face Packs or Masks? Face packs could be a wonderful option to go for both prevention and treatment in case of mask acne. Homemade mask having honey as a natural ingredient could help a lot in reducing acne. Whereas, charcoal and clay masks drive excess of oil from our face and help a lot in toning face. Face masks could be used thrice a week in morning or in evening.

4) Don’t Miss out Sunscreen: Make sure you are everyday protecting your skin, doesn’t matter if you are inside or outside. Yeah! I do understand how this sounds, sunscreens feel heavy, sticky and does not smells good. I know you always wonder why you need to apply sunscreen as they clog pores, and are greasy and sometime cause acne or what if you have oily skin? There are several questions that rises which is why you don’t like applying sunscreen and that’s common. I did some homework to find out some sunscreen products which are super light, non-greasy and most importantly non-comedogenic that you would definitely have to check out here 6 Best Non-Comedogenic Sunscreen suggested by Skin Care Experts ( 2020 Sunscreen Guide )

5) Say Yes to Chemical Exfoliation instead of Physical Exfoliation: It proves to be gentle to the skin and extremely effective when it comes to exfoliate. According to Dermatologists says that chemical exfoliation can be generous on the skin as it does not involve scrubbing also boost up Collagen production. Glycolic Acid (for normal skin) and Mandelic Acid (for sensitive skin) is much more effective in form of a toner which may use at night after cleaning your face.

6) Use Spot treatments for Acne: Spot treatment becomes very important to treat acne as early as possible since continuous exposure to sweat that is produced underneath your mask. Honey alone, Benzoyl Peroxide, Hydrocolloid patches could be used on acne spot which relatively helps drying out acne.
